Inmarsat a British satellite phone company launched its new IsatPhone Pro handheld satellite phone on June 15th. Inmarsat is terming the IsatPhone Pro as a “game changer”.
Demo models are available now to try out. In the next month Inmarsat will start ramping up production releasing the units for sale.
The new IsatPhone Pro satellite phone will have a long battery life and will be priced at $699.00. Street price is expected to be in the $500.00 to $600.00 range once fully released.
Chairman and chief executive Andrew Sukawaty stated, "The IsatPhone Pro is tailor-made for tough use. Rugged, splash and dust proof, and with long battery life, this is the first satellite phone to be built for the Inmarsat network from the ground-up, responding to customer needs, for use in harsh environments”.
The IsatPhone Pro is targeting customers that need remote communications at sea and remote parts of the world where conventional communication is not reliable or available.
The IsatPhone Pro will have a battery life of eight hours talk time and one hundred hours standby time. The satellite phone is shock resistant, dust resistant and splash resistant.
It offers high voice quality capabilities as well as text and email messaging. It will also have location data where family and friends can determine the location of the phone by text messaging sent from the phone.
The design of the antenna allows the handset to be placed on its side allowing for hands free use using Bluetooth technology.
The handset has a GSM style interface and a highly visible color screen with a large keypad.
Inmarsat will be very aggressive in grabbing it own piece of the market share away from other satellite providers including Globalstar and Iridium.
