Globalstar, the world’s largest provider of satellite phones announced a new completed gateway in Singapore is on-line. The new gateway will provide Globalstar satellite phone coverage everywhere in Singapore, Malaysia and large portions of Indonesia. Singapore Telecommunications Limited (SingTel) will be operating the gateway, which is to launch satellite services by late 2008.
Tom Colby, Chief Operating Officer of Globalstar said this region of Southeast Asia has some of the fastest growing economies of the Strait of Malacca and is one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes. Globalstar’s commercial maritime satellite products will do well in this area.
SingTel with the presence of the Globalstar gateway will strengthen Singapore’s position as a global satellite hub. It is also a milestone in SingTel’s quest to transform the global transportation industry.
Later this year SingTel plans to offer Globalstar Simplex data services to their customers in Southeast Asia. This will provide solutions for logistics and maritime asset tracking applications. SingTel will also offer satellite messaging and personal tracking using the SPOT Satellite Messenger product. SingTel will offer all of Globalstar satellite services after the launch of the Globalstar second generation constellation. The launch of the new constellation should begin with sixteen satellites in the last quarter of 2009.
