Historically between Oct. 1st and 20th, the sun’s rays may interfere with satellite phone service, cable television, Internet and long distance service. This is because the sun’s path moves directly behind the area where satellites and ground station antennas correspond.
These possible interruptions occur each year around the time of the equinoxes.
There are semi-annual events called sun outages, which affect all satellite based communications including satellite phones.
Telephone calls to and from Alaska and International calls could be affected with outages lasting 15 minutes.
The most severe outages are expected to occur between Oct. 4th and Oct. 8. The outages may occur throughout the day, even after sunset, as signals are bounced from satellite to satellite around the globe.Back to Satellite Phone News
